The Paternal & Kin Families Kappilly Mana

EDAMANA -[Kappilly Mana] is the paternal family of Ādi Śaṅkarāchārya. They carried the leg side of Aryamba’s mortal remains to the funeral pyre. Thereafter, EDAMANA nicknamed as KAPPILLY MANA [ KAL(FEET).

  • Custodian of Aryamba’s Site: The family preserved the cremation site for centuries, maintaining the daily lamp of respect beneath the Ashoka tree and protecting the spot with a simple compound wall. This tradition was upheld from the time of Aryamba’s passing until 1906. The fact- finding mission in early 1900 came and stayed at Kappilly Mana.  They noted that the Antherjanams of Kappilly Mana are daily lighting a lamp near Poorna river side in walled compound on black lamp post under an Ashoka tree. When inquisitive fact- finding mission from Sree Sringeri Mutt asked Kappilly Antherjanam, she reacted that it is the spot of mortal remains of our grand -grand old mother whose son was a great Sanyasin. He could not attend mother’s cremation, but reaching later he asked the family to continue lighting the traditional lamp as per ritual till annual Shradha and Sapindeekaranam which he assured to attend and give the pious Atma relief, and stop off the ritual light.
  • Even after acquisition, Kappilly Subrahamanian Nambudiri approached the Travancore highness to continue with their obligation to the Atma of lighting the lamp leaving the 25 acres around the spot of remains. King offered Rs.10,000- as compensation telling it can enable to buy 10 Kara like Manickamangalam Kara against 25 acres acquired. He reacted that I came to continue my Dharma (Obligation), not for Dharmam (Alms) and left court yard. The oral account was given by Smt. Gangadevi Antherjanam came to Kappilly at the Age of 11 as wife of Damodaran Nambudiri, younger brother of Subrahmania Nambudiri who was the eldest member at the time of Acquisition.

ACT OF PRESERVATION

  • The sacred Ashoka tree, under whose shade Aryamba’s mortal remains had rested for centuries, was cut down and removed
  • The protective family wall was dismantled.
  • The ancestral tradition of the daily lamp, which kept the Atma connected and honored until final śrāddha and sapindīkaraṇam, ceased.
  • Ironically, the Travancore Government’s stated goal — “preservation,” later entrusted to the Sringeri Mutt — ended the natural guardianship long held by Shankara’s family. Even from the 25 acres acquired by Travancore highness and transferred to Sree Sri Sringeri Sarada Peetham for PRESERVATION from paternal family of Shankara 13 acres were given to a family in private possession with full and complete rights b the holi MUTT.

The Marble plaque describing the Aryamba Samadhi Spot was identified from the Black lamp post.It was from the daily ritualistic lamp by KAPPILLY family from whom they even came to know about the spot.

The Black lamp post which has an inscription THEKKE MADOM VAKA in good Malayalam script evolved after 16th Century

What a contradiction with facts by making an unholy claim, hiding facts by the holiest of Adhyatmic institutions of Bharath Varsh holding spiritual tradition of our Acharya Jagat Guru

Land Acquisition: On January 27, 1906, the Travancore Government acquired 25 acres of land around Aryamba’s samādhi from Kappilly Mana.

Misattribution: Later records and publications, starting with early Sringeri Mutt records, mistakenly attributed the donor as “Ka<i>ppilly Mana,” obscuring the identity of Śaṅkara’s true paternal house. Correcting this misattribution is vital to presenting Kalady’s heritage accurately. May be disciple Mutt do not want to be coloured as snatching Land of own Guru using royal influence and power.
