Puthen Kavu Bhadrakali Kavu: The Guardian Deity of KALADY

The Puthen Kavu Bhadrakali Kavu is deeply revered as the Kaval Devatha (Guardian Deity) of Kalady. This shrine holds a special, emotionally resonant place in the history of Ādi Śaṅkarāchārya’s return:

Oriiginal Location: The Kavu was originally situated right at the centre of the town.

  •  Guru’s Repentance: When Śaṅkarāchārya returned to Kalady very late, after the cremation of his beloved mother Aryamba, to meet with his paternal (Kappilly Mana) and kin (Thalayattumpilly Mana) families, he was overwhelmed with repentance. He chose to spend an entire night weeping under the banyan tree situated before the Kavu, mourning his unfulfilled filial duty.
  •  the 1900s, the sanctity of the Kavu’s environment was disturbed when a non-vegetarian market and a vegetarian market were opened just around the temple.

As a result of this encroachment, the trustees of the Kalady Devaswom relocated the Kavu, pulling it amidst a paddy field about a kilometer away from its original town-centre location.
