Thekkemadom: Śaṅkara Saṅketham

Thekkemadom, a Śaṅkara mutt based in Thrissur, was traditionally the holder of the archaka (priestly) rights at the ancestral Sree Krishna Temple. More significantly, Thekkemadom enjoyed Kingship Rights as Śaṅkara Saṅketham (sacred center), which included fiscal rights (Rajabhogam) and control over religious precincts.

  • Supporting the Ritual Lamp: Thekkemadom installed a black stone lamp post at Aryamba’s site to support the Kappilly family’s long-standing daily lamp ritual. The inscription on this post, “THEKKE MADAM VAKA,” is in Malayalam script which evolved only after the 16th–17th centuries, proving the post was installed centuries after Aryamba’s cremation, contrary to some claims.
  • Legacy Erased: This kingship and custodianship was abolished by Kerala Act 15 of 1980/81. Thekkemadom’s primary property in Kalady is now held by the Sringeri Sharada Peetham, a transfer that has effectively wiped out the last traces of Thekkemadom’s traditional kingship from the soil of the Acharya’s birthplace.
